While Recognition and Appreciation has always been a responsibility of the Ministry of the Public Service, it was not until 2006 when Belize signed onto the United Nation’s declaration for Public Service Day to be celebrated on 23 June annually, that commitment to service was cemented and to which the Ministry has since aligned its recognition and awards program for public officers. Third only to two predecessors, namely Margareth Ventura and Murtle Palacio, who started the awards and each managed for one year, and in 2008 Freya took over the lead for Public Service Recognition and Awards Program, initially as director of what was the Governance Improvement and Public Sector Modernization Unit of the Ministry of the Public Service, and later under the Customer Service Quality Assurance Unit, formed in 2012 within the same Ministry.
As Chairperson for the Public Service Day National Committee also, a body established to support the celebration and recognition of the value and virtue of the public service and public officers, Freya was able to garner support for the program’s expansion. In 2017, the Ministry of the Public Service implemented a Recognition and Meritorious Awards Policy, inclusive of the 35 Years Long Service Awards and Outstanding Awards categories. Over the years, the Ministry continued to support the implementation of new initiatives under the program, whose aim is to build a culture of appreciation and care, thereby contributing to a people center public service that enables and enriches Belize and the world.
Today the Customer Service Quality Assurance Unit of the Ministry of the Public Service, continues to manage the Belize Public Service Recognition and Meritorious Awards which initially started with recognizing approximately 125 officers annually in 2008 to more than 1000 annually 15 years later, and with approximately 30 being for induction annually on the Walk of Recognition and Inspiration.
