Julio Shal

Julio Shal’s journey in public service began shortly after completing his studies at Toledo Community College. Growing up in Pueblo Viejo Village, he understood from an early age the importance of family and responsibility. At the time, joining the Belize Police Force appeared to be an opportunity to provide stability and help support his parents and siblings. What began as an opportunity for stability would become a 35-year career dedicated to serving the people of Belize.

On July 3, 1990, Julio officially joined the Belize Police Force and began his career in law enforcement. Throughout his years of service, he worked in various communities, including Mango Creek, Placencia, San Ignacio, and Belmopan. He also served in specialized areas including the Special Patrol Unit (SPU), Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB), and the Major Crimes Unit.
Through dedication, hard work, and experience, Julio progressed through the ranks from Constable, Corporal to Sergeant, Inspector, and ultimately Assistant Superintendent of Police. Throughout his career, he faced many challenges, built lasting friendships, and gained experiences that shaped both his professional and personal life.

For Julio, policing was more than a profession. He took pride in serving and protecting the law-abiding citizens of Belize and considered himself a crime fighter. He valued teamwork and the strong relationships he developed with colleagues throughout his years in the Force.
His career was also a journey shared with his family. Julio and his wife were blessed with two children. Balancing the demands of police work and family life was not always easy, with long hours and assignments often requiring time away from home. Through it all, his wife remained a constant source of support.

As he prepares to retire after 35 years of service, Julio looks forward to what he calls his “new, and perhaps best, shift”, spending more time tending to his plants and animals, working on his farm, and enjoying life at his own pace.
To the younger generation of police officers and public officers, Julio encourages them to work hard, take pride in their profession, and always strive to do better. He recognizes how much policing has changed over the years, particularly with advancements in technology and modern policing methods. He believes that through dedication, teamwork, and commitment to the community, officers can help prevent crime and contribute to a safer Belize.
As he closes this chapter of his life, Julio is grateful for the experiences, colleagues, and opportunities that shaped his journey, and most importantly, for the family who supported him throughout the years. He gives thanks to God for granting him the strength, courage, and health to serve his country.

It has been an honor to serve and protect.
