Janet Westby and the late Egbert Miguel welcomed their baby girl Melanie on 12ᵗʰ June 1972. Her formative years were spent in Corozal Town. She attended Corozal Methodist School and at age 12, Melanie moved to Belize City. That is where she began her high school journey at Wesley College, where she graduated with her diploma in Academic Science in June 1988. That same year she entered the Belize Technical College, graduating with an Associate’s degree in General Studies in June 1990. It was not too long after that she began her public service to the country of Belize.

On April 24ᵗʰ, 1991, Melanie was welcomed as a Clerical Assistant into the Housing Department, which was located behind the old prison on Goal Lane at that time. She worked there for 14 years, and during that time she sat both her Second-Class and First-Class Clerical Examinations and was successful in both. In March 2005 she was transferred to the Treasury Department where she worked in several capacities for 5 years, before she was promoted to the post of Administrative Assistant 11. She was transferred to the National Forensic Science Service Department in May 2010, where she serves as their present Administrative Assistant.

Melanie’s life was shape by a lineage of deeply strong and faithful hard-working women, her mom Janet Westby, her grandmother Hortence Blackman, and her aunt and second Mother Kathleen Grant. Hortence and Kathleen have both now passed away.

Melanie is the mother of two children, Kiara and Denron, and an adopted son, Jahron, along with her life partner Aaron Benguche. She is a lady of absolute dignity and stays out of trouble. She likes to read in her quiet moments. Beneath her demure stature she is a fierce protector of her family and friends.

Today, as the public service honors her decades of dedication, Melanie’s message from her lifetime of experience in the service is not just work for a living, but pour your heart into what you believe in. True service is not about applauding; it is about showing up for the people who depend on your service - even when no one is watching. Stand firmly in your truth; guard your loved ones fiercely and never let your size define the space you take up in this world.
